Spring Cleaning Checklist

What do you think of when you hear the words “spring cleaning”? Most people think about cleaning floors, walls, and windows, dusting furniture, and disinfecting surfaces. But have you ever thought about doing some spring cleaning on your plumbing or heating/cooling equipment? Doing so will help you save time, energy, and money. Check out our spring cleaning checklist! 

PLUMBING

  • Perform a leak check of all your pipes in your home. Check for tears, bulges, or leaks in your water supply lines.
  • Clean your dryer vent
  • Clean the inside of your washing machine
  • Empty your washing machine drain pump
  • Dust around and behind washing machine and dryer
  • Test your sump pump for proper operation by pouring about a gallon of water into the pit. The excess water should come out of the drain pipe.
  • Pour bacterial drain cleaner down your drains to eliminate debris build-up
  • Put mesh strainers over your drains to prevent hair and debris from clogging drains
  • Check for proper operation of your water heater. Make sure it is not leaking or displaying any error codes
  • Clear wintry debris from gutters, downspouts, and storm drains
  • Check for leaks in outdoor spigots and replace if necessary. If the dripping persists, then the pipe froze and needs to be replaced
  • Clean out your grill
  • Remove rust stains from toilet seat screws
  • Tighten toilet seat hinges
  • Clean off mineral build-up from showerheads and faucets
  • Pour ice and cold water down your garbage disposal to clean the blades

HVAC

  • Clean all your air vents
  • Dust & mop all your surfaces. Dust, dirt, and allergens can accumulate on surfaces when you keep your windows and doors open
  • Clear clutter around the home. Dust can collect on those surfaces that can aggravate allergies and lower the indoor air quality of the home.
  • Clean all your windows. Letting in the sunshine through clean windows is a natural and money-saving way to heat your home on those cool spring days.
  • Change your furnace filter
  • Remove plants and weeds from around your outdoor A/C. Keep a two-foot clearance around your unit
  • Inspect and caulk around windows and doors. This keeps the heat out in the summer and cold drafts in winter.
